When you’re in the throes of designing a new bedroom for your home, make sure you don’t let your space down with furniture that screams clunky and chunky. Here are some smart bedroom furniture and storage concepts that’ll add value to your space from a practical and design perspective.

Build it high and wide

The problem with traditional freestanding wardrobe units is that they take up valuable floor space while they’re incredibly limited in capacity – especially when you need plenty of clearance to open those gaping doors!  
By building a wardrobe that spans the width of your room from floor to ceiling, you’ll gain masses of extra storage space without protruding too far into the floor area. You can also choose between folding and sliding door mechanisms (or a combination of both) to make super easy work of opening those large and heavy door panels. Folding and sliding door panels are also a great way to limit door protrusion while making the entire contents of your wardrobe visible in one swift move – and we all know how important that is!      

Drawers under your bed

You’ll probably appreciate that bedroom furniture can be incredibly wasteful with your limited space. In fact, you’ve probably got a queen or king-sized bed stretching across the floor offering nothing more than a cosy shelter for your dog or cat. So, why not fill this waste of space with some custom-made drawers with fully extendable runners so they can be pulled right out from under your bed? A few deep drawers under your bed could be the ideal place to store heavier items such as shoes while offering better protection for delicate and expensive items like hats.  

Wall niches

If you move away from traditional-style freestanding furniture in favour of a sleeker look, then, you might have to prepare to lose some of those surface areas you once used to display a few things. But fear not, there’s a solution for this too and it’s completely in keeping with the modern aesthetic you’re going for.
Inset wall niches make good use of wall space without encroaching on your floor area. Depending on where they’re positioned, wall niches inset into plasterwork could be an alternative to bedside tables, cupboards and shelves offering ample storage for books, photos and many other items.  

Hidden cupboards with concealed hinges

Any bedroom will benefit from having plenty of cupboard space to organise and hide items of clothing or even children’s toys. But, most of us would probably rather not have to look at them – it’s a catch-22. Well, the good news is, you can do exactly that by incorporating hidden cupboards into your room. Whether they’re behind your bed or across the wall, cupboards can vanish into your room with neutrally toned doors that use concealed hinges and push-to-open mechanisms.

Fold down desk

Whether it’s for studying, life admin or working from home, your bedroom can sometimes offer a peaceful sanctuary to escape and get a few things done. But, putting a full-blown desk in your room will just take up more space you can’t afford.

Installing a desk that folds down on hinges from any vertical surface can take as much or as little space as you like. All you have to do is store it against the wall when you’re done and, hey presto, it’s gone!
